A sublimation tumbler and mug is a blank drinking vessel designed with a special, heat-sensitive polyester coating that allows for the permanent transfer of a full-color image using a sublimation printing process. This special coating is key, as it enables the sublimation ink, which changes from a solid to a gas when heated, to infuse directly into the coating and fuse onto the mug or tumbler surface. This results in a vibrant, long-lasting, and scratch-resistant design that does not fade.

Craftsmanship

A heat source for sublimating mugs and tumblers is an essential tool. They are different from the standard Heat Press used for items with flat sublimation surfaces. You can either use a mug and tumbler press that has a cylindrical heating element, a convection oven, or an air fryer.

 

After you print your design using a sublimation printer, you need a way to transfer that design to your blank drinkware. Heat and pressure allows you to make that design transfer through the scientific way of sublimation.

 

By applying the high temperatures, about 350 to 400°F, from your mug and tumbler press, you are turning the ink from your printed sublimation design into gas. That gas is permanently transferred to your mugs and tumblers then transforms into a solid ink again in the form of your design.

 

Besides the high heat, you also need constant pressure ranging from 40 to 80psi while pressing your design. If there are any changes in pressure or have an uneven pressure, then you will encounter two of the most common problems in sublimation: ghosting and blank spots.
